Introduction

The ELOISE cluster of research studies began in the mid-1990s and since then over 100 million Euros has been spent funding 56 projects carried out by Europe’s most prominent researchers investigating the interactions between the land and the ocean. Each of these research projects lasted for several years and on average cost over 2 million Euros and involved 3-8 institutions in 2 or more different countries. This represents a colossal investment in research to develop our understanding of coastal systems in terms of resources and scientific and technical expertise.
Following normal academic practice, the participants have submitted valuable results to the peer reviewed literature and over 400 papers have been published following this work. However, for many people, such technical reports, are not easy to follow. Scientific papers, whether in natural or social sciences, often present more detail than is required by some readers and the discussion may not address issues such as the practical application of the work which some readers may find of particular interest. Thus, the development of this website has been funded to overcome this problem and to act as an introduction to the results obtained from the ELOISE projects. It is hoped that it will be of help all those who interested in this research to find out about the products and information. |

What this website should help you to do

1. Enable a reader to find out about ELOISE without having to approach the scientific literature in the first instance.
2. Provide an overview of some of the significant results from ELOISE of interest to a wide population.
3. Provide a gateway to more technical information on ELOISE by guiding the reader to academic research papers.
|

Approach taken to dissemination

Four themes have been identified from the ELOISE projects and for each an overview has been prepared. These themes are;

1. Habitat dynamics at the coast-catchment interface.
2. Nutrient dynamics in European water systems.
3. Climate Change.
4. Contaminant budgets in the coastal zone.
|

| These overviews include a general discussion of the range of topics covered by the ELOISE projects, some case study information and links to the more detailed information in the published literature. There is also a glossary to help with some of the more technical terms. To familiarise yourself with the layout of information in this website, please go to the sitemap.
